About the Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture

The Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture is named after an outstanding Italian physicist. Every year the Centre of Erice hosts several workshops covering different scientific disciplines (e.g. physics, medicine, chemistry, life sciences etc.) for hundreds of scientists participating. It was founded 60 years ago. Since then, this centre has represented an important meeting place for scientists from all over the world. This Institution is neither an academy nor a university like those familiar to us all. Bell, Blackett, Rabi, Weisskopf and Zichichi, signed the charter constitution that gave new meaning to Science and its culture in 1963. Every year since 1963, authors of new discoveries and inventions come to Erice; 102 of them were awarded the Nobel Prize after their participation to the EMFCSC activities and 49 were already Nobel laureates. In the course of the Centre's sixty years of activity (1963-2023), over 135.000 scientists from one hundred forty Nations have taken part in post-university activities to promote a Science without secrets and without borders. The celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the Centre will be held in Eric on 10-12 November, 2023.
Embracing 136 Schools, covering all branches of Science, the Centre is situated in the old pre-mediaeval city of Erice where four restored monasteries provide an appropriate setting for high intellectual endeavour.
